Kathmandu: Defeating Portugal, Serbia has secured a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar. Serbia secured a place in the World Cup after beating Portugal 2-1 in the European qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar on Sunday.
Renato Sanchez scored the opening goal at Portugal’s home ground, but Serbia returned to the game. Dusan Tadic scored in the 33rd minute of the match and Alexander Mitrovic scored in the 90th minute to give Serbia a thrilling 2-1 victory.
With the victory, Serbia topped Group A with 20 points. Portugal will now have to play playoff games in March to qualify for next year’s World Cup. Along with the defeat, Portugal’s journey to remain unbeaten at home in the World Cup qualifiers has also come to a complete halt. The last time Portugal was defeated was in October 2013.
