Madagascar shipwreck loss of life toll rises to 85

At least 85 people have been killed in a shipwreck off the coast of Madagascar. The death toll rose to 85 after maritime authorities exhumed 21 bodies on Thursday.

Maritime officials said 138 people were on board the 12-foot-long boat that sank on Monday and only 50 were rescued. Among the dead are five children.

The unlicensed wooden vessel was heading from the village of Antsera to Soanirana-Ivongo about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south.

According to Adrian Fabrice Ratsimbajafi of the River and Maritime Ports Agency, preliminary investigations have revealed a “technical problem” with the ship’s engine.AFP / Photo: Agency
