Ranipokhari within the fingers of Mahanagar: It might no longer be constructed, it may well be stored

8 Dec, Kathmandu. After realizing the ownership of Ranipokhari from the National Reconstruction Authority, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Vidya Sundar Shakya said in a cheerful manner, “I am happy when Ranipokhari is handed over.”

While Mayor Shakya was rejoicing, Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi was thinking that the Ranipokhari, which was rebuilt in Pratap Mallakalin style, would have been rebuilt by the metropolis. She said the same thing on the show. The metropolis did get that opportunity, but lost it in the controversy.

After the renovated Ranipokhari under the leadership of NEA returned to the ownership of the metropolis during his tenure, Mayor Shakya tried to explain his contribution. Shakya even went so far as to claim that work had been done on the reconstructed Ranipokhari according to his own terms and design.

He clarified that the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) had to be given the responsibility of reconstruction at the request of the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli due to allegations in the construction of Ranipokhari. “There was an allegation that the mayor sold Ranipokhari and ate it. The then prime minister asked me not to get involved in this controversy, but to engage in other activities. I agreed to give it to the authority,” he said. Stating that a consumer committee has been formed and reconstructed as per the advice of the metropolis, he claimed that the metropolis has also contributed to the reconstruction of the dome style temple which was changed during the Rana period.

The metropolis wanted to build a swimming pool

In fact, it was not what Mayor Shakya said. The foundation stone of the reconstruction of Ranipokhari, which was damaged by the devastating earthquake of 12 April 2072 BS, was laid by President Bidyadevi Bhandari on 2 February 2072 BS. But he tried to build a concrete structure on his own. Ethnologists, engineers and locals did not wake up on time According to the design of the metropolis, Ranipokhari was built like a swimming pool . After the construction of concrete structures was started to stop the flow of water, voices were raised from the people to save Ranipokhari.

The Navy Union had played football in Ranipokhari at that time to press for speedy reconstruction.

The metropolis, which stopped work after pressure from all quarters, formed an expert committee for the study, but did not want to work in the Mallakalin style as per its recommendation. The committee headed by Bishnu Raj Karki, former director general of the archeology department, had proposed not to implement the recommendation of the metropolis and the archeology department to use army in the reconstruction of Ranipokhari. Was given to the Reconstruction Authority. After the NEA mobilized the consumer committee, no further disputes arose. By handing over Ranipokhari to the metropolis before its dissolution, the Reconstruction Authority has tried to send a message of ‘success’ from the place where the reconstruction campaign started.

How does the metropolis operate?

The Reconstruction Authority does not want to go back to the past while the officials of the metropolis are still working to avoid any mishap.

But the departing officials of the authority are worried, how will the metropolis protect and manage Ranipokhari in the future? He is of the view that the trend of taking political action but not paying attention to the use and protection of public property should not be repeated in Ranipokhari.

“We have returned the nose of the metropolis to the metropolis,” said Gyawali, chief executive officer of the Reconstruction Authority. We want the metropolis to work to increase the value of this heritage. ‘

Mallakalin Golpati made in Ranipokhari

According to Gyawali, NEA has completed the first phase of reconstruction of Ranipokhari and handed over only the inner part. As the institutional arrangement of NEA will not be maintained from Saturday, the remaining 5 percent of the work of the second phase has been handed over to the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction. “The rest of the work, including the entrance to Shantibatika and Jamal, will be completed and all parts of Ranipokhari will be owned by the metropolis,” he said.

According to Gyawali, the importance of Ranipokhari has increased as the surrounding environment has also been molded in Mallakalin style. Stating that Ranipokhari has been returned to Mallakalin style so that everyone can take ownership, he expressed confidence that there will be no disputes in the future.

“The construction of the pond was done by the local consumer committee with the help of the archeology department, the mayor and the ward chairman,” he said. Let it be operated and managed in a way that will further enhance its glory in the future. ‘ Gyawali is of the opinion that work should be done in the future to make ‘Greater Tundikhel’ for that.According to Bharat Prasad Aryal, joint secretary of the Reconstruction Authority, Rs 81.5 million was spent for the reconstruction of the pond through the Consumers Committee. An additional Rs. 174.5 million has been spent for beautification, construction of Balgopaleshwar temple and bridge under the first phase and about Rs. 260 million has been spent.

“The authority will no longer exist, this old heritage will last forever,” says Joint Secretary Aryal.
