BEIJING: Chinese media have speculated that Omicron, a newer variant of COVID seen recently in Beijing, may have entered Canada via mail. On January 15, a person was infected in Beijing. The infected residential premises and work area have been sealed.
Pang Tsinghuo, deputy director of Beijing’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the infected person had received a letter from Canada on January 7. Health officials said the man had a “post” infection. He said that he was getting repeated mails from outside.
All the employees contacted by mail are now in quarantine. So far eight people have tested negative. Although Chinese officials have claimed that the virus was transmitted by mail, some researchers have expressed doubts. Officials said the virus could not survive for long on the surface.
How are new forms of the virus emerging?
Viruses usually make their own copy. It is also considered continuous and natural. In this case, small mutations also occur. As the mutation progresses, a new form of the virus evolves, which we believe to be the origin of the new variant. The new version can be anything harder or softer than the previous or original version.
Why did the WHO list the latest version Omicron as a ‘type of concern’?

Is this version more contagious than the previous Delta version?
No such confirmation has been received so far. However, Italian scientists have confirmed that the spike protein of the Omicron variant has twice as many mutations as the delta variant. However, it has not been proven to be more contagious than Delta.
